I accidentally placed the parking ticket with the magnet stripe on the back of my iPhone 12 pro and when I tried to pay for parking later it said my card is invalid.

So I’m not sure if it’s the phone or the card but I think it is the phone since I never had any problems in the same parkade before. It’s a shame if this is caused by MagSafe as there’s a lot of things that can be demagnetized. Anyone else experienced this?

Isn’t it known that phones can mess up hotel key cards and the like? It’s not necessarily a MagSafe issue but you’re not supposed to put those types of cards close to any phone.

Loool okay nah, that's a new problem. I've never had parking tickets demagnetized by my phone.

Not quite sure that something like that is known.

Sweet baby Jesus... first the MagSafe puck leaves marks and charges slow, now potentially this?

I had this question in the back of mind, but figured Apple would have this sorted. It’s been known that magnets and credit cards don’t mix. Yet Apple adds a magnet in the iPhone for secure wireless charging, but they surely thought about potential demagnetization of credit cards and other similar strips.

I have some time before the 6th to see what stories/reviews come up around this. Will hold final judgment until then.

Didn’t have any problems with all my other iPhones being close to any cards or tickets

yeah who could have seen this being an issue? I posted this in accessories thread that the MagSafe and wallet was a horrible idea. credit cards are now being rendered useless. I called Apple and they said to use Apple Pay instead. I mean for real?

If this happens, they almost always ask you if you put it in the pocket with the phone. Never a good idea.
But obviously much worse with magsafe.

Yup, magnets and magnetic strips don’t mix well. Apple couldn’t be boosting their Apple Pay by messing up credit cards with magnetic wallets, could they?

Reminds me when i toured factory that made latex products. Saw how they made baby nipples injection molding and last step was pin probe that put hole in end of nipple. Next department over had the condom injection molds, various sizes colors etc. Noticed the same pin probe at end of condom line. When I inquired wasn’t that making the condoms sorta useless. They told me yes, but sales from baby nipple line were up 300% After they installed the pin probe on condom line.

There was a news piece with information pertaining to this the other day.

When asked about MagSafe concerns Kaiann Drance said:
“We are taking care to make sure that we're being as protective as possible, and those credit cards, they're made with magnetic stripes that are pretty strong so that shouldn't be a problem next to next to your phone... what you do want to just watch out for is those single-use types of cards like the hotel cards... you might not want to put that right against that, but certainly, we've got great options like the wallet, the wallet is shielded.”

As your car park ticket is most likely a one time use deal, this seems to be something that’s known about.

I've seen some videos from the likes of MKBHD and UrAvgConsumer, and the Wallet isn't as secure as they say, it can easily slip off when putting it in your pocket, which kind of makes the idea pointless, who's gonna have their iPhone 12/Wallet combo not in their pocket, well I guess those who carry purses/bags, but they could easily slip off.

And also you're never supposed to put magnets next to something like a card key or credit card.

In the videos I have seen, those who had the wallet slide off were using it on the back of the phone without a case. I forget who it was, but there was a video showing that the wallet on an Apple silicone case was absolutely fine and didn’t slip off going into jeans. This would make sense as there is no friction helping the wallet adhere to a glass back, whereas there is with a case.

I'll be the one to agree with you. I've had many hotel key cards become inactive after I've inadvertently put them in the same pocket as my phone. I'm much more careful with hotel cards now. I haven't had an issue with any other types of cards though.

It’s very common in hotels to be told not to put the keycard next to your phone because it can erase the card. All of those temporary cards are vulnerable to it.

I would imagine MagSafe makes it worse but it’s a commonly known issue even before MagSafe.

Can't say I've ever come across that personally either on the part of being told about that or experiencing issues with it. Also can't say that I've seen much about that elsewhere. That isn't to say that something like that might not happen, but not really sure how common something like that is.

It’s anecdotal but I’ve stayed in hundreds of hotels over the last 7+ years and I’d estimate that I’ve been told this in about half of them. It’s easy to find discussions about it online too.

Yep. My parking ticket was wiped today too. Parking guy at the pay machine call let me out for free. Thanks parking guy and Apple 😊
