The MagSafe/MacBook Air connection is failing. The magnet works, but the charging light doesn't turn green unless I keep trying to reconnect it. I'm guessing the cable has failed, and I'll have to order another, but I'm wondering exactly what the issue is.

Does the connector (both on the cable, and the internal connector) look clean and undamaged? Sometimes, the internal connector (the built-in connector, more than the cable end) will pick up magnetic particles, and the connector may not seat properly. A careful cleaning of that connector may help. A common nylon "spudger" is a good tool to use for cleaning (avoid using any metal tool for probing around in the connector)

How old is your MBAir?

MB Air is 2 years old. Connectors appear clean. The connector seems to seat properly (i.e. it snaps securely into place). I've ordered a replacement (not from Apple, who won't be able to ship until very late this month, but from Amazon, who carries the Apple version), which I'll have tomorrow morning, thankfully.

OP:

Just some random thoughts.

I have a 2021 MacBook Pro (not "air").

When the charging light DOESN'T turn green, do you get an icon resembling "a plug" in the menu bar?
(instead of the lightning-bolt icon)

This would indicate something isn't right with "the connection".

Something else I've noticed with the MBPro, may have no application to the MBair:
If I plug the charger into power (first), and then connect the Magsafe connector to the MBPro, I'm likely to get the "plug" icon in the menu bar, as I mentioned above.

HOWEVER... if I connect the Magsafe connector FIRST, and THEN plug the charger into power, things go as they should.

It's been like this for a while.
I've just learned to connect the charger in "proper sequence" as I describe above...

No icon appears, but it does (and the light on the MagSafe connector turns green) when I either tilt it up or down. But it doesn't when it's essentially locked into place, i.e. straight in.

I used a small foam "sponge", and now, amazingly, it works! Thank you for replying to my query. Much appreciated.
