I would think this method would stiffen the cable to be more horizontal, rather than bent or curved down (so gravity has effect on it). A more stiff, horizontal magsafe cable would probably be less likely to come unseated, since the cable is not always pulling directly down on it.

Actually, it's the opposite.
Extending the rigidity of the MagSafe's magnetic plug past the head of the plug causes less "give" which will make it easier for it to become unintentionally unplugged. This is seen with MagSavers. MagSavers enclose the wire below the magnetic end about an inch in solid plastic. I have them on my MagSafes, and I can tell you that they definitely cause it to become unplugged much easier. It's annoying, but they will help keep the wire from forming a loose connection with the plug.
