When I respond to an email a return arrow is shown between the name and subject line of the original email in the list of emails in my inbox or whatever folder it has been placed. I used to be able to click on that return arrow and my reply would pop up in a separate window. That no longer happens. How can I get that back?

I’m in Sierra with Mail v10.3 and when View>Organize by Conversation is NOT checked...if I have responded to an email there is a “reply” style arrow to the left of the contact’s photo icon. Clicking that arrow brings up my reply in a separate window.

I do not have Organize by Conversation checked. My reply still does not show when I click on that return arrow.

Does anything happen? If I’ve deleted the reply I get an error message.

What version of macOS are you running?
I am running 10.12.6.
When I click on that return arrow the same thing happens as when I click anywhere else on that line, the email is selected. If I double-click the same thing happens as when I double-click anywhere on that line, it opens that original (not my reply) email in another window.
