I've just replaced my 2012 MacBook Pro with a 2020 MacBook Air M1 and I'm having problems linking my email accounts to Mail.
I must have set it up incorrectly as the Mail app icon in my dock is showing over 50,000 unread emails. Even if I 'Select All' and then 'Mark as read', they reappear again.

I have always had my gmail and 2 x hotmail accounts linked to Mail, and any new incoming emails simply appeared in the Mail inbox. I can't recall how I linked them to Mail when I first set up my 2012 MacBook which was 9 years ago, but I never used to get all these alerts. I was hoping that iCloud would just do it for me on my new MacBook Air, but I had to add the hotmail accounts manually.

Is there something simple I can change to sort it out please?
