mail and wifi

so i'm now on 2.0, iphone version 2g, and while i'm on edge and check for mail (i always check manually) the spinning wheel at top churns at its edge pace for a few seconds and then stops. but when i'm connected to wifi the wheel just spins infinitely and doesn't seem to want to stop. i don't remember it doing this in the past. any thoughts? thanks
