First of all I have an iPhone 4 on 4.1 JB. I received an email today at 10 AM. Each time I tried to open my mail, when it started Downloading, my mail would crash. I kept trying and it would keep crashing.
I checked my gmail later and saw that I had an unread message. Every once in a while my mail will show 1 unread on my iPhone. Obviously when I tap mail, it crashes shortly after.
There is nothing malicious / odd about this email. It's from someone I know personally and have received mail from before.

Any idea why this is happening? Ive deleted it from gmail and my mail STILL crashes.

I have the same problem on my Jail Broken iPhone 4 running iOS 4. I thought it was because of the jailbreak but in Apples discussion many people have been having the same problem. But there does not seem to be any solutions. The only thing that works for me is to read all of my Gmail emails through gmail, then reopen the mail app.

-EDIT-
I would like to correct myself and say that if there is a specific email you know is hanging up the app, you only need to read that one.
