I'm about to sell my Macbook Pro and go full iOS. I'm wondering, though, how to empty trash in the Mail.app? I use iCloud, Gmail and Exchange (work) email accounts and none have an "Empty Trash" option.

In OS X Mail I periodically select Mailbox>Erase Deleted Items>In All Accounts... and Mailbox>Erase Junk Mail.

Are there iOS equivalents?

Cheers,

Steve.

Thanks for the quick reply. So I just trash the trash...?

I've been on iOS since the original iPhone and I've only just – five minutes ago - discovered I can have an "All Trash" mailbox. Lots of other options, too, under the "Edit" option...

Yes, trashing the trash is how you permanently delete e-mails.

Its a good idea to check your settings, making sure you aren't archiving things that you want deleted (maybe obvious to you but a lot of people make that mistake) and also "Delete from server" is set to "When removed from inbox" if you have any POP accounts.

I thought a smartphone is for doing things which can be automated, so you don't have to. Any reason why you bother to clear out the trash? Those mails are discarded at predefined times, based on your mail service provider.
