I just noticed that the default Mail application provided by Apple doesn't have an associated icon in the Menu bar. Occasionally I like hiding the dock but would like to keep an eye on my e-mails via the menu bar. Can this be done?

Erm, if you have Mountain Lion installed (And maybe Lion-don't know you have notifications in the Menu Bar.

They appear in the Notification Centre but not in the Menu Bar. I checked the settings and there isn't any option to enable a Menu Bar icon. Unless the terminology here is skewed.

Not by default with Mt. Lion, but there are some apps like this you can buy to add that functionality.
