mail.app now asking for password?

I have Gmail setup in mail.app. Lately, it has been asking for the SMTP password occasionally when I am sending mail. It has a checkbox to save the password in my keychain. I already have the password saved in the mail.app account settings. Why is it still asking me for a password from time to time? It's pretty annoying.
