Anyone have a fix for this error: "Mail cannot access your mailbox information because it’s already in use"

Reindexed Mail.
Started with a new Mail profile in a new User letting all messages download from the server.
Restarted in Safe boot mode.
Run Repair Drive and Repair Permissions from Recovery drive.

Without email, I'm back in Mavericks until I can find a fix.

Is this on the public beta?

Unfortunately I cannot replicate. I'm seemingly getting so lucky it's frustrating me to no end. I must have purchased one of those magical iMacs cause I just don't run into bugs. I'm beta testing for the precise purpose of helping find bugs but there's nothing for me. :/

You removed your account and re-added?

Yes, it's the public beta. I too have had very few issues with Mail in Yosemite. After exausting all steps to fix in my User, I created a new User and added my accounts in the new User. It worked initiallly but sadly it started all over again.

Other than starting with a new Yosemite base install, I'm not sure what else to try.

What are the steps to wipe the current Yosemite install and install fresh?

Hold the alt/option key as you boot to boot into the recovery partition. It should probably let you run a clean install of Yosemite from there (without touching data).

Or you could wipe data from disk utility in recovery, reinstall Yosemite from recovery and start completely afresh but be careful with that as it IS beta and something could go wrong during recovery. Either way I hope you're backed up.

I was able to download the Yosemite PD2 and ran it over my install. Did not fix the error. Next step is to do a clean install of Yosemite.

Backed up with clone and most files are on DropBox.

Good luck!

If it doesn't work for you I guess there's always going back to Mavericks for now. At least you gave it a try and I hope you submitted the issue to Apple using the feedback tool as that's what they're looking for.

I'll try sending some of my own Mac luck to you. :p

Look at this thread, this is not a new error, its been around.

This will essentially reimport all your mail boxes.

Having the same issue here. Tried everything but it still remains. Didn't have this problem with DP6 but am with PB2. Thinking I may try to upgrade to DP7 to see of that fixes it.

Interesting, this is mail is Apple iCloud I assume. Does the Apple iCloud Web interface work?

This is Apple Mail.app using a several email accounts. 2 iCloud and 3 personal domain accounts. All IMAP.

After the last forced quit by the error, it opened a second Mail icon in the Dock. I checked and it was pointing to the same app in Applications. I thought perhaps it might be finding my clone backup but I had ejected the drive to eliminate that possibility.

See the exact wording on the error. I've never had more than one copy of Mail open in the volume where Yosemite is installed.

So just wanted to post an update. I did the Delta update from PB2 to DP7 and so far, for the last 35-40 minutes or so, the issue has not occurred. Usually it would happen in a matter of minutes of me opening up Mail, but it has not happened at all in the last half hour. Maybe it was just a weird bug in PB2 that was fixed in DP7.

Out of curiosity, what if you disable all except one mail account at a time to maybe isolate if the error follows one of the accounts?

(Mail Preferences -> Accounts -> Account Information -> uncheck "Enable this account")

Edit: Oh! you posted as I was typing. Hopefully DP7 fixed the issue!

I'm on the public beta so I will have to wait for a fix. At least I know to stop hitting my head against a wall trying to fix it.

Considering moving to Entourage temporarly so I can get mail and continue testing Yosemite. Outlook is just too unreliable to use in Yosemite.

I am experiencing the exact same problem. I did a clean install of PB1, upgrade to PB2 and from the start I got the, "Mail cannot access your mailbox information because it’s already in use" message. After trying several possible solutions over several frustrating days I gave up... unchecked Mail from iCloud and installed Thunderbird. Still using PB2 and Thunderbird works perfectly. No Mac or other IMAP emails lost.

So, Thunderbird seems to be an alternative to reinstalling Mavericks.

Hopefully, another clean install of PB3 (if there is one) or the final release and this problem will be corrected. That said, I find I like Thunderbird and may stick with it!

Current testing shows it's one of my iCloud email accounts that is the culprit. After disabling the problem has gone away.

Since the account work in other email clients and in Mavericks, it seems specific to Yosemite Mail PB2.

Hope this helps others that are having this problem.

I think I have it working now!

My email host prescribes ports 993/465. Mac mail would set up my domain IMAP accounts with ports 143/587 and I kept changing them during the setup process. During the last attempt I left them 143/587 and Mail has been rock solid for 12+ hours!

Okay so finder: go: hold alt to select library/library/mail/delete everything inside the v2 and v3 folders

THIS WILL DELETE ALL YOUR MAILS.

But it will sort out the problem, well it did for me. At your own risk obviously.
