Mail, Contacts, Calendar in Preferences

Any one know about this setings

under MobileMe (and other accounts) there are options for

Mail & Notes, Calendar & Reminders and iChat

Mail and Notes is not ticked, but these items are syncing and working fine

What does this tick box do ?
