iPod touch Mail delete does not work

Several days ago I lost the ability to delete individual messages in my Inbox of the Mail program by touching the trashcan symbol at the bottom of the screen. I can delete messages by going to the edit function first. I have a 64 GB 3d generation iPod Touch.

I would appreciate any suggestions or ideas.

If you swipe left to right in the inbox on a message, can you delete then? Have you tried restarting the iPhone, syncing it to your computer maybe?

I tried your suggestions, including swiping the email screen and re-synching the device, and unfortunately the delete function still does not work. I would appreciate any other ideas.
