Mail Dock Unread Count Help

Hi, I recently moved all my stuff from Gmail to Mail and wanted to know if there was a way I could see the unread count on Mail's icon (the little badge) without having to have Mail open. I'm using Gmail's servers and stuff, so is there a problem with that? I couldn't find it in Preferences.

The Mail icon will not update without it being open. You could always use Google Notifier to be notified when new mail arrives when Mail is closed.

You could just open mail and then close the window. Do you want to save some system resources by not having mail open?
