On PCs, there used to be a program called Pop goes the gmail which acted like a pop server between gmail and whatever email program you wanted.

Since gmail doesn't have pop support, is there a software that will check gmail?

There are a number of Gmail POP3 clients for windows. Don't know about Mac.

I found gcount, but it only shows the number of emails on either the dock or the top bar.

Oh well, it's better than nothing :)

I use GMail status. Its free and its also a menu bar app. Very non-intrusive.

Since GMail is still Beta, I heard that many of the POP apps for the PC are broken now as they continually refine the log in and authenttication routines for Gmail.
