Mail icon gone...totally gone

Okay, I am a novice on the Mac (OS X 10.6). My mail icon is GONE! Don't ask. I went through the finder, nothing. Any other advice to locate it before I have to re-install my OS? If I have to do that, anything in particular I have to do / don't do?

Click on the magnifying glass in the upper right corner and type Mail ... does it find it?

If you have a Time Machine backup, you can do a super-quick restore of just that app, vs reinstalling the whole OS.

It's not by chance in the Trash, is it?

Not in trash, magnifying glass...not sure. Is it a file or the actual icon will come up in the list under the magnifying glass?

The icon will be listed next to Applications.

Time to re-install the OS?

You can reinstall just Mail from the OS X disc using Pacifist, without completely reinstalling the OS.

It does cost $20, but I think you can use it for free at least once.

I think I will just go with a complete re-install.

r.j.s. and aristobrat..........I am good now, re-installed the software. I will look into Time Machine, would be easier I am sure. I really appreciate both of you giving me your help!
