Mail icon (in dock) keeps saying 1 unread mail

There is no unread mail in the folders, but the "1" on the mail icon in the dock does not dissapear. Restarting did not help. I also trashed the mail icon from the dock and created a new one, but this did not help either. What else can I try? Please help! Thanks!

I did Mail>Mailbox (not Message)>Rebuild. And, an unread mail suddenly appeared! So, it was not a problem with Doc not updating but a mailbox not showing a newly arrived message. Strange. Thank you, Skunk, for your help!
