I recently went through 3 different webhosts and went through the same problem with all fo them. That is trying to get their imap to play well with mac mail. I currently have one that works fine except for one problem. It doesn't consistently read messages well because it says it can not connect to the server. The problem is that sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt' and this is with multiple domains and their addresses. There is no pattern to it. For example one domain has 7 addresses associated with it. 4 aren't connected and two are and the setting are the same. furthermore i'm using this with 3 devices, iphone, imac, mbp, and have the same randomness in functionality. I have contacted the webhost and they say their imaps ports are working fine...I don't know why this is such a problem. The last host i had I couldn't even connect to their imap servers from mac mail at all. Is there something else i can check.

sorry should have clarified, it works fine with those for me too. its literally just when i'm using my host and the registered domains with them. and i have switched hosts three times this month because of this issue with the the same sites and address. I just cannot get imap to work smoothly

IMAP Connection problemsn

Dont know if others are experiencing this.. but I am using surgemail as server, and accessing it from mac mail. i have 3 different email accounts and when I try to connect mac mail tries to make 4-5 distinct connections per email account.

This is creating an issue as it exceeds our security configuration on our servers.

Is there a reason anyone might know of why so many IMAP connections are being created?

because Apple thinks it's a Good Thing to do since it can speed up message traversing (especially if you have lots of sub folders). it isn't. and no matter how many people complain about it over the years, they don't appear to care.

Look into an alternative like Postbox, GyazMail or Thunderbird which let you adjust the number of simultaneous connections.

I have the same problem - I think....

I have set up IMAP accounts in Mail for our 'home' domain and they work fine, as do gMail, MobileMe and Yahoo email accounts. However, I have 6-7 email accounts under a different domain name which connect perfectly using POP but present errors using IMAP.

Compounded again when I can set up these email accounts on a friend's Mac using Mail.....

Is it my ISP? Is it my DSL Router? Is it my Mac's settings? Is it Mail? Is it my domain host? Would love to solve this problem.....
