Mail/iMessage apps shutting down

Hi everyone,

This is my first post on MacRumors, although I've been following this website for years. I bought a MacBook Air last year, and upgraded the os to mavericks when it was released.

Last week I tried opening the Mail App, and as soon as I go to start a new email, the shuts down.
Last night, I tried using iMessage, and as soon as I went to send a message, it kept shutting down.

Any fixes for this?
