As the title states, I was wondering if anyone has experienced mail-in repair for the MacBook pros. I noticed that there is pixel bleeding happening on my mac and after chatting with apple support, they want me to mail it in. But I don't want my device to be restored, which leads to my question; when you sent your device in did they restore it? (they did this for my phone but hoping its different for this)

I am going to have my display replaced for $100 because there is a dent and that automatically denies warranty coverage (really BS). Even though the pixel bleeding started after the keyboard repair but since there is a small dent on the lower side (pixel bleeding on top middle), it's not free.

But rant aside, please comment on your experiences with mail-in repair, thanks!

It has been years since I went through this scenario but, when I got my Mac back from the depot, the OS had been reinstalled to the latest version. Whether that happens with you or not, I don't know but, I would go into it with the mindset that it will occur and make backups of your data before hand.

Use either CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper to create a cloned backup of your internal drive before you ship it in for repair.

Both CCC and SD are free to download and use for 30 days.

That’s a good question. I actually reset my MBP before I sent it. I was having issues and decided to do a fresh startup when I get it back. I have key items backed up where needed. I sent in my MBP for repair on the 23rd and it’s supposed to be delivered back to me tomorrow. I’ll let you know if they did anything to mine.

Because the storage is permanently soldered to the main logic board, if the computer fails any diagnostics, they'll replace the board and you'll lose your data. I wiped my computer when I sent it in for a keyboard replacement and it came back without being erased by the repair technician, but you have no way of knowing if they'll do that or not, and you have no say in the matter.

I haven’t used mail-in repair, but for service the Apple store has shipped my macs to the service repair center.
I haven’t had them wipe my system, but they always do warn you that there is a possibility of them wiping your data, so have a backup.

Not too long ago they did replace the logic board on 2017 non-TB mbp I have, but that has a replaceable SSD, which they moved over so my data was fine.
