since iOS 9 my mail app has not pushed or fetched gmail and hotmail emails unless I rest network settings - if I do that it lasts about 5 days and then reverts to only retrieving mail when I open the app. It is really really annoying. Anyone had this and got a permanent fix?

Same here, not able to move messages to the trash, and fetching messages that were deleted 2 weeks ago. Never had problems before until iOS 10. It freezes the phone.

I've been using the outlook app for my hotmail account. The stock iOS mail app is just unreliable for push email.

It's really frustrating. The mail app is basically useless since iOS 9 and it worked fine before then. I can't be the only one with this problem

Did you do anything different? I was really hoping for this to be fixed in iOS 10

You're not the only one. I use an outlook.com account and have the same issues with iOS 10. Worked fine in iOS 9. I even tried deleting and reinstalling the accounts on my iphone/ipad. No dice.

The native email app is the worst. My gmail never pushed with it...even pushing on my exchange account was extremely flaky. I went with the gmail app (I get email when it's sent...not whenever the phone feels like it) and the Outlook app instead. I don't mind separating my work email from my personal anyway. I'd really like for the mail app to work, but it just doesn't for me.

It's annoying that a 'fundamental' native app is so so unreliable. Not the first time I've felt like software is taking a back seat

just a FYI: the client mail apps don't "push". It's the servers that do the push and client apps only fetch that. Difference is whether the pull is asynchronous or timed.

The easy and reliable solution to mail problems on any version of iOS has always been to simply:
    • remove the account from the device
    • power off the device
    • power on the device
    • add the mail account back
This will solve mail problems simply and easily nearly ever time when IMAP or other modern server/cloud protocol is used for the account. It's honestly not worth troubleshooting when this will solve the issue immediately.

    * The only reason not to use this solution is if you are still in 2016 using POP email! If you are, then you need to make sure that your POP mail has been saved to another device because removing the account will also remove the emails.

Tried this numerous times. I will again for good measure. I use gmail and hotmail

I should add resetting network settings offers some reprieve until I sync my phone again. Syncing my phone is a guaranteed way of the mail app not working (in my case)

Are you using iTunes to sync? If so, make sure that you have disabled all of the syncing categories like Mail, Contacts, and Calendars under the "Info" category for your iOS device. Anytime someone uses the term "sync" with modern email providers I get concerned that they are actually still syncing data with iTunes.

I have always had all those settings under iCloud on and don't see why that should be a problem

Since I did this a few days ago things have been ok so far so hopefully it stays that way
