Have you installed any plug-ins (aka bundles), like the httpplugin/httpmail or similar? If so remove those and see if Mail starts to behave again...

Edit: This could, BTW, also be a good time to repair permissions, especially if you haven't installed any plug-ins/bundles, as this is one possible symptom of broken permissions...

Widgets?

Several months ago, I had a problem where the Mail.app would re-launch immediately after being closed. After some frustration I realized that a Mail related widget I had open in Expose was responsible for restarting the app. Not sure if that is the problem in your case, but could be worth looking into.

Even so, you should move it (temporarily) to see if that's the cause of your problems. If it isn't we need to look elsewhere, and if it is, and you want to continue using it, then so be it, you just have to live with force quitting Mail...

Mai not quittingI

I have exactly the same problem and no bundles at all. Never installed them myself, unless they can be installed together with some other software. But so far the accounts I use are from aol, gmail, me.com and netscape. I had that with a older macbook pro, and now with the new one, and i didn't copy my HD but i did sync with me.com

cascurrias, are you having this problem? Without having to pull the designated plists, you should just be able to update to 10.5.7 to fix the issue.

Mail not quitting AND not letting emails IN...

My Mail app stops importing and says: "Mail Activity: Incoming messages -- 18 of 83 -- 0 Kbs."

A few new email headers show in the Inbox, but there is no content.

The app just hangs there.

When I quit, it doesn't really quit. I have to Force Quit, even though Force Quit does not say that Mail is "not responding".

How do I know if I have those plug-ins you mentioned?

I am already running OS X 10.5.7

TIA
