Mail Not Retaining Password

MacBook, 10.5, Apple Mail blanks out password in the account setup pane after I type it. With the password blanks, Mail wants me to enter my password each time I get mail. I can enter the password when setting up the account and Mail puts dots in the space, however, as I tab to the next field, the password field is blanked out.
