Mail notifications - random delay

Hi, my Mail notifications (visual and audio) are delayed by an apparently random period (can be many, many minutes). Does anyone know a fix for this – it seems to be a perennial problem. I have tried zapping the NVRAM and even the SMC(!) but no change. Do I have to trash the prefs and set everything up again? Hope not.

iMac 27", 2019. 10.15.4 / Mail 13.4 (3608.80.23.2.2)

Same issue here. The visual is immediate but the sound cue comes up some random time later. This has been going on through several OS upgrades.

Not a big deal, just tends to be annoying.
