I set up an IMAP account in mail to access my email from school. When I open up mail it displays all my folders on my user account(and not just mail folders) and continues to download the files in the folders. So next to a folder I'll see it counting up as it continues to get files until the server drops me for having too many open files or something. Is there I way I can set this up to just get the mail folder and nothing else? Had previously been using thunderbird and everything was working fine.

It appears that you need to add a directory prefix. In the settings for that account, click on the Advanced tab, the field you want is labeled IMAP Path Prefix. Common values are ~/Mail or ~/Mail/ but it varies. Thunderbird should have a setting like this too, if you still have that installed you can peek in its settings to see what worked.
