Mail problem

My mail application on my macbook doesn't seem to work. For the past few days every time i open up the application it receives duplicates of the most recent email in my inbox (one of them got to like 90) and I can't even read these new messages. All old messages in my inbox seem to work fine as they had previously but any new incoming mail can't be read and they get received multiple times.

any help would be appreciated

What account do you have in mail? What type is it (imap, pop, etc..)? Have you tried simply rebuilding the folder?
