I'm having trouble setting up Mail to check my university POP email account. I enter the details and it goes away to check the settings and comes back with...

"The POP server “xxx.blsh.blah.etc..” is not responding. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the “Incoming Mail Server” field. If it still doesn’t respond, the server might be temporarily unavailable."

When I enter the exact same settings in Mozilla Thunderbird it works fine. Why would I be getting this error in Mail and not Thunderbird?

Possibly something to do with password authentication. Mail defaults to, I think, no encryption, but your school might need it.
