Mail search no longer finding the latest email?

In the last month or two the search on Mail seems to be going wrong, it's hard to explain or know exactly what's happening but I think when I search a term or name, the latest email with that isn't picked up by search.

For example, if I have an email from Bob that week, when I search "Bob" their old emails are found in search but not the latest one, which I would expect to be at the top.

Does that sound familiar to anyone, or prompt any ideas to fix it?

I am using an account through gmail in Mail.

I get the same issue. Running Apple Mail. When I search for a name or subject the search option ignores recent emails. Infuriating. Gaslighting!
