This has happened since I upgraded to iCloud.

About a week ago my dock Mail icon was showing I had 1 unread email, but in Mail I couldn't see any unread emails. I opened my iCloud account in Safari, and sure enough there was one unread mail in Junk. I deleted it...but it made no difference to my Laptop Mail account - it was still showing one unread.

Today it was now showing 2 phantom unread emails in my dock icon. Again,

Any ideas?

cheers

I think I've solved this. Deleted the com.apple.mail.plist preference file. Seemed to work OK, and the phantom emails are no longer showing.

One small ( strange observation ) - I thought that, if you removed a preference file ( .plist file ) from your library/preference folder, when you restart the program it creates a fresh .plist file.

But it doesn't seem to have done this.
