The basic problem of limited data (memory) storage for 128GB or even 256GB (retina) MacBookPros really hurts when the contents of Mail Folder (under Library) start to accumulate...
1) Is there a possibility that this Mail Folder can be removed from the Flash Memory and stored in an external data storage unit?
2) If no, assume that you install an e-mail client (e.g. Thunderbird) and start using this one alongside with Apple's Mail. Is it possible to remove Thunderbird's mail folder from the Flash Memory and store it in an external data storage unit?

Thunderbird can be configured such that it only syncs the subject (not the whole body) of each message.

As an aside, if you have money to spare then you might have a look at the Tardisk Pear. This adds an SD card and then merges it with the internal SSD so you have one big volume.
