Mail suddenly letting a lot of junk mail through :(

Is anyone else experiencing this? In the past week in particular, I’m getting an absolute onslaught of junk mail that’s slipping through the junk filter. Several a day. Nothing changed on my end that I’m aware of. I only have a gmail and my iCloud mail attached to the mail app. Anyone have any recommendations on things I should check or settings I should adjust? I’ve never had this issue before, the filter usually catches everything.

is those coign from your gmail or your iCloud account?
I only have gmail and I manage it on the server side (web interface) and it is actually pretty good, but, just like you I've been getting more in the past few weeks, they typically do not show up on my mail app on my iPhone

All coming from the gmail, I’ve had that account for probably 10 years at least. I’ve never had so many get through the filter. I’m sure my email has been sold a hundred times over, lol 🙁 Hope this is only temporary.

do you manage those junk messages in the mail app on the iPhone? as is said, I use the web interface and don't really see any in the iOS mail app.

Yeah, I only ever use the Mail app, both on my iPhone and Mac - I almost never log into the gmail interface on the web. I wonder if gmail is the problem, I guess I’ll log into it and dig around and see if anything is off? I like using just the Mail app, it’s convenient and minimal.

in the web UI, when I flag a message as junk, I often get asked whether I want to unsubscribe or report as junk, I always choose junk. I do no know how the mail app on either iOS or Mac "reports" to the gmail app when a message is marked as junk.
I do not recall ever changing a setting in the web UI re junk mail, I always managed junk mails individually by marking them as junk

I also check and empty my junk folder (again, using web UI) every morning, occasionally there is a legit email in there.

it's all part of my morning routine, after I check all my financial apps on the iPhone for potential fraudulent activity, then onto iPad to check mail and read news, been doing that for 10+ years ...

This is happening to me as well. All of a sudden, I am getting on onslaught of junk mail through my gmail account. I haven't changed any of my mail settings. I haven't used my gmail account in a couple years, but it was definitely involved in a data breach several times years ago. What I don't understand is most of these emails used to be flagged as junk (Subject headings: "**** Me!" or "Payment Declined!" etc).

My mail is also very slow to download (all my mail accounts).

Add to this is the fact that I have corrupted fonts making some of my mail virtually unreadable, and I'm really hating OS26. (I've mostly fixed the mail font issue, but still...).

I have my own domain from my ISP so this may not be relevant to people using gmail as I don't know how that works...

I have my email locked down REALLY tightly. Whenever I get spam which is now incredibly rare I add the domain or even the TLD if it's unique enough to my block list. It's so locked down now I can identify who is selling my data (or has a compromised site).

Signing up to forums and new sites, even the ones the explicitly say they don't sell your data, often leads to a glut of spam coming in. I bought car insurance recently and had to sign up to the site to access the account. After that I started getting spam through. Its usually from one specific domain, sometimes multiple but Im locked down enough now that's its very manageable. Just copy and paste the domain address(es) into your ISP block list.

To get to this point I spent about two days a few years ago going through all my old junk email, collecting the domains and any unique text strings within the content. I added the domains to the block list and the unique but oft repeated text strings like "drone-x pro ultimate" to a server side filter and since then I get almost zero spam. Maybe once a month I'll get a single email which I've never had before and I just add it to the list.

You can set filters and build a block list in outlook web app. I use my ISP admin page for the domain block list under the 'spam filtering' email tab as I can block Top Level Domains. That means if I get loads of spam from addresses all ending with .fish. i.e. newsletter@internet.fish I can block every email that would come from the .fish level instead of having to keep adding different emails all ending with .fish. Saves a lot of time and effort but you need to be careful. Obviously don't add .com or commonly used TLDs as you wont get any emails from it.
