I love it...but my wife is finding it too easy to delete emails by swiping all the way left on emails. In iOS 7, a left swipe would bring up a delete button. Now in iOS 8, the deletion is immediate.

I know you can shake to undelete. However, is there a way to turn the swipe option off completely?

Try Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Swipe Options (in the Mail section)

Yes, I had already looked there. The options are very limited:

    None
    Mark as Read
    Flag
Archive (on swipe to right only)

There does not appear to be a method to restrict the delete option, at least from that menu.

Note: "Ask to Delete" is set to on but that appears to only come into play when using the Trash Can icon to delete.

Sounds silly but maybe get in the habit of starting further over on the message header before the sweep. That way she does not move enough to complete the delete action.

I am sure that there is a "getting used to it" factor. But it is a little surprising that Apple doesn't give you a bit more control over something that could be tough to recover from...deleting messages inadvertently.

That's interesting, in an odd way, you would think that the swipe left feature would relate to what would happen when you would swipe all the way to the left (as it seems to work that way for the swipe right feature), but no matter what that swipe left feature is set to swiping all the way to the left still goes to deleting a message. Something doesn't quite match up there.

Just seems to me that there should be a way to force confirm deletion. I know it is an extra step (a very quick extra step), but with iPhones/iPads being used for business mail, deleting could be pretty damaging.

There is a way to confirm the delete:

Click "Edit", tap the button next to the e-mail, then click "Trash", confirm on "Trash Message". ;)

Podcasts and a couple other apps I use have the same issue. Need to be mindful of finger placement.

That too (as there existing option should apply already). But even with that it seems their implementation for swipe right and left isn't really consistent.
