I have just upgraded to a new MBP and in all emails received from a particular address, the attachments are winmail.dat.

However, on my old Mac, all attachments from the before mentioned address were perfectly readable.

This is really god damn frustrating and hours of googling have been no help.

Any advice?

Thank you for the replies guys.

So is there really no way that this can be rectified other than to use an application?

I just don't understand why all of a sudden this has become an issue...

That winmail.dat file is something that Microsoft Outlook and related tools will generate and will expect; it's a feature used by Microsoft mail clients, and by few other mail clients. Please see Free Online viewer for winmail.dat email attachments for how to deal with it.
