Mail- winmail.dat

I have just upgraded to a new MBP and in all emails received from a particular address, the attachments are winmail.dat.

However, on my old Mac, all attachments from the before mentioned address were perfectly readable.


This is really god damn frustrating and hours of googling have been no help.

Any advice?

Thank you for the reply, I have seen that.

However, I don't want to have to have a 3rd party application to open the attachments.

It worked perfectly without one before so why, since the upgrade, has it changed? And how can it be fixed?

No. Microsoft got onto Apple about this. Now there is also the shareware Letter Opener. However the Tef Enough will decrypt that old really Microsoft Outlook junk.

While its not a fix, you can forward the entire message to a gmail account, and open it using the web version of gmail (https://mail.google.com/).

That winmail.dat file is something that Microsoft Outlook and related tools will generate and will expect; it's a feature used by Microsoft mail clients, and by few other mail clients. Please see Free Online viewer for winmail.dat email attachments for how to deal with it.
