Main advantages of Airport express?

Hey guys,
can anybody explain to me what the main advantages of the airport express are?
what exactly does it do and is it just a modem? or what..?

id be hooking it up with a macbook, an iPod Touch 4, and another 3 windows laptops.

Does it work with windows too?
