1. Is it possible to upgrade your RAM if you buy it at a local Apple Store rather than online?
If you don't want to do it yourself, it would be much cheaper to buy online than to buy in the store and pay to have them install RAM for you.

2. Can you upgrade your RAM later on or do you have to do it when you buy the computer?
You can certainly upgrade it later on and it is very easy to do yourself.

My son, who has a MBP, told me that an illuminated keyboard really isn't necessary because the screen lights up the keyboard just fine.

Disagree. Backlit keyboard is really nice. Good in twilight as well as pitch black. I can't see going without it now.

I would even go with the more expensive MB just because of it. (Not to say it alone is worth $300 alone but it would push me to the upgraded model and I'd enjoy the other stuff I'd get with it)

I did buy the 2.0Ghz model. I did not really care about the backlit keyboard. I did not want a big hard drive because I know when Black Friday comes around, I will buy a 1TB for cheap. Also, I plan to max out the memory in a couple months when more memory from other companies will be available.

2 years from now, the difference in resale value between the 2 current models (before upgrades) will probably be around $200. If you look at it that way, the price difference now for the higher spec'd machine is easier to swallow.

holy crap it's just a ****** light behind some keys

i would only find the backlight really cool if the lights were super-precise and lit up the letters only

You clearly never had a laptop with a backlit keyboard. Even while sitting next to a lamp I use the backlight. I thought it was a gimmick with my PB, but now, it is 100% worth the $300 price tag. The real world benefit of .4 Ghz is pointless. The larger hdd is nice but easily replaced. $300 bought a light ... yes Apple sucks for it, but for me it'd be a no brainer.

who the hell looks at the keyboard while typing

using my educational discount, the difference came out to be $250 between the two MB versions. I ordered the 2.4ghz version. here's why:

-Back-lit keyboard is a fantastic option to have in case you get into a low lighting situation
-additional 400mhz is 20% increase in cpu performance.
-slightly larger HD space is always nice to have.

I got the higher end for the same reasons. I already had enough for the BlackBook last generation, so I still wanted the top of the line Macbook. (it it only came in Black aluminum!)

Huston, I'm going Mac!

I never look at the keyboard when i am typing letters, but there are times when you look at certain things like numbers and symbols...

And it's just cool :)

Of course the $300 is not justifiable for just the keyboard, but the price for the speed bump is not free.

Also I think that Apple wants to make the lower end MB as cheap as possible so hence they did not included that option...

In a perfect world though they should have included the back lit as an addon option. Although it is a little different vs how there are no white 8GB iPhones.

I wonder if the back light keyboard can be had as replacement part in the near future. A new keyboard cost less than $100 new.

I've got a 500GB drive and 4GB of ram on the way for my new Macbook. I'll probably end up getting the 2.0Ghz model as I don't really care about the backlit keyboard.

Can anybody advise here whether I should buy the 2.4 macbook or wait for nehalem processors? I'm be gonna be using windows side by side and wondering how much more performance can one expect from Nehalem processors due the second quarter of 2009???

I bought the 2.0GHz model plus 4 GB plus a 320 GB HDD comes out to just under 1500 after rebates and taxes. The 2.4 GHz model is 1589 assuming your tax rate is 6% with 2 GB RAM and 250 GB HDD. (Hope you got your free printer with your MB! Well 6 dollar printer due to taxes).

I needed the 4GB of RAM but the CPU just isn't as important and probably will go unnoticed.

our tax rate is 8.25%. i didn't bother with hd or memory upgrades because they can be done later easily. the processor and backlight were the deciding factors for me

What's your final price?

I'd assume so. Though as much as I like Amazon OWC has a much better lifetime warranty on RAM plus they guarantee compatibility. The 4 GB kit at OWC is 139. You can even send in your two original sticks for 15 bucks. (Though it's not that much obviously but you could attempt to sell the originals on ebay).

I have a MacBook Air... The backlit lights are actually a pretty big deal to me. It frustrated me not to have it on Macbook..and has been a treat to have.

It shouldn't be a deal killer, but if you will work on your computer in the dark very often, it is quite nice.

Ouch. Yeah if you were able to wait you could have bought from Amazon for no tax. You paid $124 in taxes. Though if you get the free printer it's not a bad deal from Apple.

The printer promotion gives people in the ed store a $100 rebate for a printer. It has to be on the same invoice as the computer purchase though. Apple has had this promotion going on for a long long time. My printer from my second G3 iMac is still being used by my mom. (About to be replaced by the one I currently use from my aluminum iMac last year and I'll be using the new one I'll be getting with my MB).

By the way, I agree I wouldn't have waited for amazon. I want it right away. I would have gone to the Apple Store in person if it weren't for me having to carry a Mac and printer around a mall.
