Maintain same gamecenter name on both iPad and iPhone?

I bought my wife and iPhone 5 andiIPad mini for Xmas. She is using the same Apple ID on both devices. The iPad wouldn't let her maintain the same gamecenter ID she set up on her iPhone. Is there anyway to maintain the same login?

I am using my AppleID for Game Center on everyone of my iDevices.
No problem here.

Are you also able to use the same nicknames on all the devices?

She is using the same Apple ID on both devices but she set up different nicknames. Can you change or merge her accounts and use one nickname across multiple devices?

Perhaps that is the problem.
I use one AppleID and it's associated name.

She had different emails, once they were corrected everything started working. Thanks for your help!
