The iPad Mini is my first iDevice.

What should I do to maintain it?

A friend told me to hold both the lock and home button for 10 seconds to give it a "hard reboot" as he called it. I have done that once every week or two since he told me.

What else should I do? WHen I click on the home button twice it brings up a bunch of programs that I have used in the past, some that I haven't used for over a month. Should I get rid of those? Apparently they don't get cleaned out when doing a hard reboot. Are they actually running?

Any other maintenance advice?

No maintenance needed. The "hard reboot" is only for when the iPad locks up. And no, not all apps in the multi-task/recent apps tray are running. iOS closes recently run apps when needed. You can delete them from the multi-task bar if they bother you, but leaving them there won't affect system performance.

The whole point of iOS is you don't need to maintain it like you do with a desktop OS. Just relax and enjoy.
