Foxconn, Apple's largest supplier, is looking to further expand its presence in India with the opening of a new production facility within an existing factory in the country to produce the iPhone, The Economic Times reports.

Foxconn is reportedly set to begin production in the new building in just a few months after ramping up hiring in the country in recent weeks, according to the report. The new building is reportedly part of Foxconn's existing factory near Chennai, India.

Apple started production of the iPhone 13 in India earlier this year, and the expansion by Foxconn in the country is part of Apple's goal to further diversify its supply chain. The new production facility is all part of Foxconn's commitment to continued investment in India and part of the government's efforts to strengthen the local market.

In recent years Apple has stepped up efforts to expand its supply chain to sources and suppliers outside of China and into India, Vietnam, and other countries. Apple's supply chain has experienced a turbulent past three years due to the global health crisis and geopolitical conflict.

I imagine it would be more like "Made in Romania" or "Made in Czechia" instead of one of the more western, richer, countries. A general "Made in the EU" would be nice though.
That alone sounds so nice and premium. Due to a higher price point, I wish Apple would at least consider making the iPhone Pro models in Romania or Czechia. If we are going to pay premium prices then it should also come from western, richer countries.

Doesn’t India require companies like Apple to manufacture their products in India if they want to sell them in India?

Apple needs to grow its manufacturing sites outside of China.

Hopefully the recent passing of the "Chips act" will encourage Tim Cook in relocating major chip manufacturing in the US. Recent events with China and Taiwan is furthering exacerbating the already precarious supply chain crunch. Nothing wrong with going with India or Vietnam but it just kind of sucks how stubborn Apple and many other major tech companies refuse to build in the US.

I can only imagine the internal panic at Apple every time Xi's China rattles its saber at Taiwan. A Chinese invasion of Taiwan would wipe out Apple.

I can't picture any real manufacturing in the US again. That said, Mexico, Central and South America would be fantastic places to build factories. Africa would also be a fantastic choice.

You’re probably right, but “Made in Germany” would probably sound better to some customers.
