After upgrading to iOS 9 yesterday, today I discovered a strange and annoying thing that I do not receive new message notifications (from neither WhatsApp nor Facebook Messenger) unless I unlock the screen first. It's like background app refresh has been turned off when in reality it hasn't. I checked from Settings and WhatsApp does have background app refresh turned on.

Does anybody know any solution to this? As you can guess, it doesn't make sense to unlock the screen every few moments to check for new messages. I should be receiving new message notifications as soon as they arrive. I can tell it's got something to do with the upgrade to iOS 9 as it hasn't happened before.

    Thanks!

Background refresh doesn't really have much to do with push notifications. So are you seeing them on the lock screen, or you have to unlock the phone to then see the banner notifications or alerts appear suddenly?

After I unlock I get all the notifications as if they just arrived. Basically apps seem to go offline when i lock screen.

Did you accidentally turn on Do Not Disturb? Look for a half moon icon on the status bar.

No I don't have that turned on. Also low power mode is turned off. So I'm at a loss what might be causing this.

Try toggling DND and then Toggling it off. You can also try resetting all settings.

I've noticed the same problem, but I'm using iOS 8.4. What could be causing it?

that sounds like the problem I had when version 8.0 was first released, no notification, and often the new message indicator showing unread even thought I've read it.
I'd probably do a clean setup.

I'm not sure why this problem is occurring. My iPhone has quite a few apps and settings (like two-step apps) and I'm very skeptical about resetting the iPhone because of this. I've confirmed that apps do go offline when the screen is locked. I logged into WhatsApp Web and after a while, it shows that my phone is offline. After I unlock the screen, it connects again as the phone 'becomes online' again.

    Any suggestions? :(

I'm afraid resetting the iPhone as new is your only option here

If I were to reset, (and that with no guarantee that it'll solve the issue) I'm assuming the backups I've stored on my Mac won't be any useful and I'll have to redownload all the apps?

There is a "notification view" under passcode of settings. Did you check that?

I have the following turned on under Allow Access When Locked: Today, Notification View, Siri, Reply with Message, Wallet. So I guess I'm good there?

Try toggling. Turn the view off then on. Then restart your device. Toggling shouldn't make a difference but as some of these threads here prove, it sometimes does.

The safer way is to download them again, to avoid corrupted apps

My iPhone was just updated to 9.0 and so decided to turn on email alerts in my Watch app (1.0.1) for the first time.
Is this what you are are talking about? I didn't get the need to unlock my phone each time I wanted to check mail. Unless I'm not understanding something it seems kind of pointless to not just go to my phone where I can see the whole message if I have to unlock it every time in my purse ahead of wanting to check mail.

I don't have an Apple watch so I don't understand how it relates. I definitely want to be notified whenever I receive a message on WhatsApp so that I can take my phone in hand and reply. I can't always keep unlocking my phone to check whether I've received a message or not, because that's what's happening. Even when using WhatsApp web, the site stops working saying my phone is offline. That's precisely the problem I'm facing. All apps appear to be going offline when the phone is locked.
