Hi,

Is it possible to download a backup of my homekit setup? Are homekit setups stored in icloud?

There are two third party (pay) apps I know of that let you do this.

Controller for HomeKit
Home+

Never saw an option for this baked into iOS. I don’t believe it exists but it definitely should.

Ok. Thanks!

I have the Home app turned on in iCloud settings, not sure which data is being stored in iCloud :) Is the Home app data stored local on all my devices (iPhone, iPad, Apple TV)? Im using an Apple Tv as hub.

I believe that’s just to restore if you sign in with another device. If, for example, you decide to nuke your HomeKit setup, there’s no way to save and recover it thru iCloud prior to nuking that I ever heard of. In other words, once you nuke it’s gone but it saves if you don’t.

Everything in Homekit is supposed to be processed locally using the hub like asking Siri to turn on a light and facial recognition but saved in iCloud, like automations, scenes, secure video, etc…

I used to use Home + and did create a backup. But when I lost my home completely, trying to restore from its backup failed. I think somewhere in their notes they say it is not guaranteed to work either. Certainly didn’t for me at any rate.

Ouch :)

Your best bet is lots of screenshots lol.

I’m sure it’s a very complicated process to create a backup for this sort of thing. It’s not like iCloud on your phone where you’re restoring contacts, messages, calendar events, etc.

Now you got secure HomeKit codes to get the device into your account. Then you got zigbee hubs with child devices where the devices only speak to HomeKit via the hub, automations, other family members, etc. Probably a huge mess with a high failure rate that Apple doesn’t want to stand behind. They got enough on their plate with bollocks software lol.

Hehe true :)

My understanding is that, in effect, Homekit data is stored in a cloud on your local network where it is shared between Home Hubs. If the primary hub data changes then it is immediately shared to the other connected hubs.
There doesn't seem a way to backup this scenario.
