What? I have no idea why this is better than typing "dad," and what if you want to call "Jim?" Do you know what numbers correspond to "Jim" right off the top of your head? Why not just use the contacts app, and type in "Jim," and click on Jim's phone number?

You know, this feature wouldn’t be necessary if Spotlight worked on an iPhone, but it never has.

Swipe down on the Home screen and start typing a contact. If you actually see that contact in the search results, lucky you.

To do this so late... at some point while I welcome the change it's meaningless. It needed to be there in like iOS1 when people were still all about T9.

Siri, call Bob.

Done
Siri: Here's what I found on the web.

Wait. Isn't it just easier to pull down, type the name on the keyboard we send billions of messages on a day, and type the phone icon?

People disliked the walled garden but this is what we end up with when you let the gophers in.

I’ve been waiting for this for legitimately 15 years. I’ve submitted feedback to Apple several times over the years. They definitely listened to me, so you’re all welcome!

Like in Samsung, the Phone app should allow us to mark the names as Tags (instead of creating new contact in your mobile). This will help any temporarily important numbers that you may need to call without having to store it. Also, allow notes to be made along the call so that we can refer this in future. Samsung Phone even allows automatic reporting of spam which could be a good addition.
i don't see use for tags,, we have to delete tags at some point? this can cause confusion on where is the contact ? in contacts or tags ?
taking notes is useful feature though.

I am so impressed with people who can add something like this to their mental inventory. I imagine they are people who can also give the correct answer first time to the question: if a bat and ball cost $1.10 and the bat costs $1 more than the ball, how much does the ball cost?

You don’t have to delete anything, when you delete call logs, all info associated with the calls will be deleted automatically without having to do additional measures. No confusion wrt contacts vs tagged numbers, I am dealing with with apartment search and want to tag the agent names without having save them since they may not be needed once I book the apartment. Instead of adding them in my contact list I can just go through the call logs with tagged names and call them if needed for any specific information. Another call back reminder option would be be good which can be automatically added to your reminder list temporarily

Siri will prompt if multiple people have the same first name.

Honestly using Siri to call people works pretty much perfectly and the only way I have called someone in my address book in over 10 years.

This dial pad searching thing sounds like something for boomers.
It does the same with HomeKit - must drive people nuts in large houses - as well as people with lots of contacts with the same first name. “Would you like to call Bob Amos, Bob Brown, Bob Cousins, Bob Derrick, Bob Emery, Bob Frances, Bob Gerald……”

Always wondered why we did have this. It’s the best feature out there. Having to go to contacts sucks. All the BS they’ve tried to push out and it took them almost 20yrs to put in the most basic and useful feature.

Adding a number to a contact or creating a new contact from the keypad is not a new feature. It is also in iOS 17. But I am glad to finally have T9 dialing on iPhone. Wonder why it took them so long though. Hopefully Apple brings further improvements to the phone part because it is important to a lot of people.

Literally talking about this today. I was a speed demon texting using T9 predictive text back in the late 90's
