I dont think you guys follow the tech industry much... Seagate was bought by Maxtor about a year or two ago... so anything you buy branded Maxtor or Seagate is basically the same, with the exception of labeling

NO

Maxtor purchased Quantum, Seagate are still very much nothing to do with Maxtor.

whatever you do DO NOT BUY a western digital drive. They are even more noisy than a MDD G4. And they don't last very long. Also the extra cache makes no perceivable difference in the day to day speed of your mac.

I have the Dual 1.25 2MB L3 G4 and i strappeed in WDs 200GB 7200 8MB buffer drive in and it flies. WD is slowly becoming the most successful HD company out there. They are a head of Maxtor in performance, price and storage capacity.

Back to the original question, your dual 1.42 mac comes with IBMs 120GB drive with its 2 MB buffer. The 180GB upgrade is also an IBM drive. and that one uses an 8MB buffer and its the fastest ATA drive out there. The 8MB buffer will help if youre going to be doing video on your drive.

My God, someone read the question - many thanks TyleRomeo - I'll stick an order in for a 120GB WD Caviar or Seagate V when the machine arrives. I need RAM too but I'm not tempting fate and waiting until the Dual arrives, whenever!
