    hey all,

i want to setup my extra router to be a free public wifi service. i have two questions. is there a way so that when ever they connect to my router it goes to a special homepage first? like hotels make you go to their homepage before you start to browse. also, is there a way to set bandwidth usage? i don't want everyone using all my bandwidth, maybe limit them to 1mbps.

    Thanks!

Some ISPs do not allow you to make a "hotspot."

He's right. You better check with your ISP first to make sure you're allowed to do this, otherwise you could get into some trouble.

depends on your ISP and the 'extra router' how much control you will have. some routers will let you set restrictions for an IP range, which would be the range offered to your hotspot clients. how much, how fast, and when are the most common settings.

if you have spare hardware and config skills, you might try THIS as a good place to start. works well, and customers always love the free except for the hardware part... best of luck.
