rip dvd audio, convert to popular codec such as mp3, select portion of audio wanted, and then make into ringtone in itunes, (this part im not if you can do, does itunes only allow ringtones to be made from songs from the itunes store or other files as well?)

I was able to do this using GarageBand. Just rip the song into Itunes then drag the file into GarageBand. You can pick any slice and then export back to Itunes as a ringtone. Run a spotlight search and that should give you detailed instructions. Good Luck!!

get the demo of wiretap pro/studio (lets you record 30 seconds in demo if i remember rightly)

put the dvd in the mac and then when you get to the bit you want just hit record.

rogue amoeba software make a free program for converting mp3s into apples ringtone format.

I have WireTap. It can be set to record only from the mic, only on your Mac, or you can choose both. It's a useful utility because you can record any sounds/music heard on your Mac :)
