I was wanting to make up some dvds composed of various movies scenes from other dvd's..for example a dvd compilation of great car chases from movies
is there any software available that would allow me to do this?

You are going to run into an issue with copyright unless this new video of yours is a commentary on movie car crashes and only uses the clips to make points. But assuming you can get past this or if the work is only for your own use then (after you have ripped the content to your hard drive) any video editing software will work. I assume you have iMovie.

But you have to convert them first to something readable by iMovie.

Have a look into this forum or search how to do this probably. There are some helpful threads about this.

Use MPEG Streamclip. It'll allow you to copy only certain parts of a DVD.

Mpeg streamclip is a good tool yes. It also has an avi converter plugin that you can use with your quicktime. Quicktime player itself also has some export options… once it can read a file that is.

Does anyone know of a good tool to convert mkv files to quicktime or ipod? Someone said Handbrake but I couldn't get that one to work…
