Hi,

I'm a dev and I really need a website. I got some questions:

- I'd like a "professional" webdomain, i.e. a ".com" or ".org" or ".net" or the likes ending. How can I buy such an address and how much does it cost per month / per year?
- Should I host my server at home (I got a spare PC) or should I rent hosting? Will my ISP get upset when they realize I got a server at home? (Note: I expect really low traffic on my site.) How much does renting hosting cost?

Thanks!

Take a look at the sticky at the top of this forum:

HERE!

Yes you can buy a website ending in .com or .net or whatever. .org is normally for organisations, like non-profit organisations etc.

As for cost...completely depends on who you go with. Don't host it from home. You can pay anywhere between $2 and $15 a month for a low end package like the one you want.

Take a look at the links in the thread I mentioned above, they will give you details for domain name purchasing (buying the .com/.net site), and hosting packages.

Also...what are you a dev in?

I actually started to read that sticky, but I didn't scroll down...

btw, I'm a Objective-C / C / Java dev.

Good luck on your dev btw.

Seconded with not hosting from home. It's a fun project, but I wouldn't recommend it for anything that you want anyone to ever see.

Domain names are normally around what, $10 a year? Hosting, as already said, ranges from about $2 to $15 per month, unless you need a dedicated, but that's unlikely.
