Agreed, but does anyone know where I could get one?
What do you think one is worth? I'll mass produce a 100 or so in cherry or walnut if I sense a desire that matches the time and expense of making them. The Touch is 8mm thick, so I used a 21/64ths drill bit to start the grove then my bandsaw to finish the angle cuts. Tell me how thick the iPhone is and I'll make a prototype to show.

If anyone can affirm that an iPhone is 11.6mm, making a nice little wood stand like the pine one I showed earlier is pretty easy to do. I don't have an iPhone, and won't be getting one (no service in my area). A 15/32 drill bit will work fine for establishing the width of the slot. Drill press is used to drill a hole straight and true through the wood block. The bandsaw is used to cut angled parallel sides down to the hole. A file or sandpaper wrapped around a thin wood block helps smooth the bandsaw cuts and square the front edge of the slot for the front edge of the iphone. Width is just the same width as the screen (narrow) dimension. Finish with tongue oil or danish oil.

I would totally buy one... need it by the end of April. Let me know your price and send me a picture.

Another quick and cheap stand is the use of an open-ended business card holder like...

Works with or without a case........
Great find, crm!

Keep em coming, everyone!

brn2ski00, do you have an iPhone or a Touch? I don't even know anyone with an iPhone as they don't offer service in my town. I can make a stand using the stated thickness but have no way to "test" it. I've picked out some nice woods, so I'll probably make a few this coming weekend. I'm tweaking the design a little, but it will remain mainly the same as you can see in the pictures posted in my blog.

Or one of these:

Sorry for the shameless plug.
It's OK, Matty. I like the stands you linked to also.

So far we've seen plastic, metal, and wood. It's pretty amazing how much potential there is for a creative solution. I'm looking to integrate a little speaker into a wood stand. I just need to find a source for the speaker. My old faithful Radio Shack isn't being any help. ;)

At work, I actually have my ipod touch on this for a stand...

It works pretty well. Just listening to music or whatever, no movie watching but it works for my needs! Has a great grip on it too...

I'm not going to ask what you mean by "whatever". ;)

Here's a question..... When (anyone) you are watching a movie on your Touch, do you listen through the earbuds, connect an external speaker, or other?

I've noticed most docks park your Touch in the vertical position, so movie watching while on a dock doesn't work unless you're pumping the video out to a TV.

I have an iPhone with the Incase Slider on it.

Can't wait for a stand!

Unless you can tell me exactly how thick the iPhone AND the Slider is together, the best I'll be able to do is make you a stand for the naked iPhone. You should pick up one of the Business card holders previously mentioned if you want a prop that will hold up your encased iPhone.

On second thought, I think that a stand for the naked iPhone would be best. I may ditch the case anyways! The iPhone is said to have a 11.6mm thickness.

I think a deep, dark cherry finish would look great holding up my iPhone! :D

P.s. Nice blog by the way!

Thanks. I just have to be more faithful toward adding to the blog. I intend to make a little cherry stand this weekend. I'll post a pic for evaluation by Monday.

All of these home-made stands are nice, but at least by the pictures I am seeing, they all lack one thing - the ability to plug in earbuds or a headset when you place the Touch upright in the stand.

My brother is in the sheetmetal biz and has made a lot of custom items for devices. I'm going to ask him to make this stand I envsion.

I'm going to draw up something similar to the wooden one pictured above, but elevated where the Touch will actually be when upright with a hole allowing a jack to be plugged into the socket. What I see in my mind right now is that it (the stand) will be turned on it's side and 180 degrees for the landscape profile when the Touch is sideways in the stand. Being metal it will have to be painted to avoid scratching the Touch. I'll draw up a diagram in a week or so (kinda busy with relatives in town now) and I'll post of pic of my idea here...assuming what I envision in this brain of mine works on paper.

Actually, Duck, I've noticed the same thing, and had already drilled a hole in my first wood stand so I could feed a headphone cable into the bottom hole of a vertical Touch. Easy enough to do in the wood stand. I really only use my stand for holding the Touch when I'm watching movies, though, and the connector is on the right when the Touch is horizontal. I'm buying a bluetooth connector that plugs into the docking/cable port, so I can use the bluetooth headphones I already own with it.

Would someone who can take accurate dimensions please measure and tell me the distance of the iPhone's headphone jack from the front edge and from the right edge when facing the front? Measure to the center of the hole if you can.

I'm making a fancier version of my wood stand from Cherry. I've widened it enough to allow the iPhone to stand vertically in a deeper slot for stability, and I want to put a hole in the slot to allow feeding the earphone jack through with the iPhone in place. I can take the dimensions off the iPod Touch, but the iPhone is both thicker and taller so I don't trust Touch dimensions to be the same for the headphone jack location. The Touch' jack is 3/8" from the right edge. That dimension is likely the same, but since the iPhone is thicker I need to know how far back from the front face it is.

Thanks,

Still got dibs on the stand! http://images.macrumors.com/vb/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

I am really only concerned with landscape mode, no need to watch a movie upright

The red plastic stand is cute. As a woodworker I'm more a fan of wood of course. With the Touch being black and chromed a stand of those colors/materials might also be nice. I've got my Cherry stand mostly shaped. I have to admit it's pretty classy looking with my Touch sitting on it. I made the width match the screen long dimension. Nicer proportion.

Is anyone interested in a smarter stand? I'm capable of putting a little speaker in one, with potentially a rechargeable battery and dock connector that will charge the battery when the iPhone or Touch isn't docked.

Here are two photos of the Cherry stand, still raw wood. I'm playing with the profile a bit. Tell me what you think. The drawn detail on the front is for a potential cut that would give you access to the home button when the Touch/iPhone was vertical. I may or may not drill it out, but it means you'll have to pick the device up to hit the home button if I don't.
