have used fring but...

it's not quite what it could be yet. there are very long delays inbetween caller and callee(?). Long enough to not be able to have a normal conversation yet. Why can't skype just make the app work on wifi only?

tried 3 options that they had. one skype and two others i hadn't heard of. all three had the same problem at that time.

We need a native Skype app. for this to work properly.
Skype-out for outbound and Voicemail + Online number for inbound.
I think we're close:

Or alternatively, Siphon is another Voip app. contender that has been turned down 3 times already by Apple, perhaps they find it threatening:

Lastly, icall, a competitor to Skype, is to propose their own Voip app. for the iphone very soon:

Thats where were at...

Yes, I have used this app - on a 1g Touch too. I am using VoipStunt as my provider and call quality is excellent with hardly any delay. It is much better than Fring. The interface is a bit odd and it did crash on me once, but there are a lot of options. You can also add more than one SIP provider.

There is a rather negative review (UK) in the Apple Store. I agree that it might be a bit expensive but apart from that my experience so far has been positive!

It ticks me off when people correct others grammar. Everybody knows what he was talking about so whats the big deal if he shortens words and uses incorrect grammar??

Well for starters, people who are educated care. It takes literally a millisecond to type the extra letters. If someone is that lazy, wouldn't you agree? It's ok to do so in text messages or IM chats. But this is a forum, not AIM or any other IM service. It's also very disrespectful.

I find your post to be very "disrespectful." 1. Not everyone is equally educated.
2. People on this forum are from all around the world; hence, have different styles of expressing their views- in this case: writing.

Getting back to the original topic: Fring is so far the best and stable app. that I have come across. Nimbuzz is also available for use with Google Talk however the call itself takes neat 3 minutes to initialize.

Regarding the depth of the iPod 1st and 2nd Gen, th3 1st Gen is thinner OVERALL.
The 2nd Gen is deeper in the middle however on the sides it is curved inwards making it not so deep as the 1st Gen. The 1st Gen is very much flat throughout; hence, the thickness in the middle = the thickness in the side. In the 2nd Gen, the thickness in the middle =/= the thickness in the side.

This might come in handy for iPod Touch Users 1st AND 2nd Gen. ;)
15$ Mic

Although for 1st Gen users ... I wonder how you would Hear if you were to call someone?

It doesn't work with 1st gen Ipods! they have no Mic-in in the "jack connectin". They only have it on the 30-Pin Dock. There are extra mics for this (google macally iVoiceIII ), but depending on the software version you have installed (2.0, 2.2, etc...) it is working or not...

This is true. I have used the Macally iVoiceIII on a 1st gen Touch. It works well on FW 2.2 and 2.2.1.

Nice review! I have used SipPhone and a 1st gen Touch with FW 2.2.1 + the Macally iVoiceIII and it works really well. As you say the call qaulity is excellent. My SIP provider is VoipStunt and at last I can make free calls to many international landlines. I had tried this on Fring, but because Fring uses a Proxy server VoipStunt would only give me 1 free call per week from my free minutes.
