I have a problem that's annoying the heck out of me. I recently switched to Pages (from word). My school uses Word primarily, but pages seems to render all of their documents really well.

My problem is, when I download a document from the school accounts, and attempt to open it, Text edit opens them all be default. So, i need to open my downloads in finder, secondary click on the file, and choose to open it with pages. Is there a way to make pages open all the .doc files by default, and not Text Edit???

I wanted to know this too, but I don't understand the instructions.
To change the defaults for a file:
  1. Select a file that needs changing
  2. Perform a Get Info on the file ( :apple:+I or Get Info from the File menu )
  3. Find the Open With section
  4. Pull down the little list box that lists the registered applications for this file type and select the one you want
  5. If the one you want isn't there, click Other Application then select it from the open dialog that appears. If it's grayed select All Applications instead of Recommended Applications.
  6. Click Change All and confirm that you wish to do this
  7. Close the Get Info window
