Hey everyone,

Hope you are well!

I currently have a 2020 MacBook Pro with i5 processor. It is one of my biggest purchasing regrets because I missed out on the M1 processor by only a few months.

I can currently get the M1 MacBook Air for £898. I have also found someone willing to buy my MacBook Pro for £660. I was thinking of making the jump but had a few questions:

  • My current MacBook Pro drives me crazy with the heat it generates and the fan noise. Whilst this sounds like a small thing, it irritates me almost every day. Is the M1 MacBook Air mostly cool and silent?

  • I know the M1's have access to iPad apps and would like to start using the Mac to edit videos. I use Luma Fusion on my iPad and would be using this to make videos. Is the experience of using the Luma Fusion app on the MacBook Air good? Also, will the Air be able to handle some light video editing?

  • I don't want to have another purchase regret. Even though I can get the current M1 MacBook Air for a discounted price, would you still opt to wait for the model coming later this year or next year?

It has no fans, so produces no noise. It stays very cool.

Not all apps are available by default, the developers have to make them available.

My main advice would be to consider getting the 16GB model to give your MBA more legs and room to grow. If the current model does everything you need it to, then no need to wait as any extra performance from CPU improvements won't be noticed.

I bought an M1 air 8gb/512gb (the 8/8 core version) just over 2 months ago mainly for light office use, the occasional Affinity Photo session, but nothing more. It seems to cope well with everything. The 8gb of ram seems to be enough for me.

I benchmarked it against my Mini with 3.2GHz 6-core Intel Core i7/64GB/512GB and it destroyed it. Now the Mini is used mainly for Logic, with tons of plugins so the Air might not fare as well in real life but I've never tried it - can't be arsed installing all the plugins again.....

The only niggle I have with the M1 as it is, is external TB3 storage isn't as fast as with the Intel. External USB users are reporting the same.
